Are Our VALUES Asleep?

It pains my heart whenever it occurs to me that we have a bunch of leaders who cannot set examples for the younger generation to imbibe. We have nothing but leaders that are selfish, self-centered, and corrupt and a questionable value system. Their decisions, actions-what we see and read about them all point to the fact that they have a sick and questionable value system.

Corruption   has eaten deep into the marrow of our leaders- our leaders have made the name of our country a laughing stuck on the global scene. Social evils and vices have consumed the giant of Africa. The center has become so united and fused together in devilish acts and practices. We have a group of people who call themselves leaders, people who have no idea about service, respect for humanity- to them; integrity is nothing but just one of the words in a dictionary.

During his lectures at Nigerian Student Roundtable (NSR2013), a Conference held in Lagos, Nigeria. Hon. Dino Melaye said, Nigeria does not practice democracy but “Greedeocracy, a government of the greedy, by the greedy, and for the greedy”. These set of greedy individuals are usually characterized by lack of (positive) Values.

We have leaders who have sold their dignity and conscience to corruption. They are nothing but a group of greedy individuals that have been united by corruption and concerned only by what benefits them and their immediate family. Corruption FC and Selfishness United…laughs

The principle that guides the life of an individual is called Values. It is the belief system of an individual that guides the way he relates with life; moral, career, religious, health, financial etc are all controlled by an individual value system. A wrong and negative value system will never produce a life of life of dignity and honor, you’ll reap what you sow- like produces like. Your values will never betray you, you are a reflection of your values.

Recently, I came up with my own meaning –an acronym of values; Vision Attitude Legacy Usefulness Empowerment Structures.

The present situation Nigeria has found herself is a question of values in leadership, our leaders lack values- no vision, attitude is nothing to write about, no legacy is being built, how will such an institution be useful to the people especially when the leaders are not empowered because they have no (good) structure.

I believe so much in the future of Nigeria, and just like Obama told Americans, I say to Nigerians, YES we can! A better Nigeria is a reality; let us readdress our VALUES- young, old, male and female, it begins with you. Enough of tribal and ethic sentiments. We are Nigerians, not Igbo, Hausa nor Yoruba. God bless Nigeria!
