Learning at the Elders’ Feet-1

Elders are meant to be evidences of history, an indication that there is a beginning. They are reservoirs of knowledge within any society and should be people from whose wealth of experience the younger generation can tap/gain some wisdom . Any society that must go far and become continually relevant on the global platform must not take for granted the wisdom of the elders.

It is however a pity that a lot of the elders that the younger generation would have looked up to for motivation are nothing but sources of discouragement. We live in a society where integrity means nothing to people occupying leadership positions- a group of people who see the position they occupy as an opportunity to embezzle and satisfy their unending personal desires.

Although there are a few of them that one may still look up to but I would advice that it should be done with intense application of wisdom and sensitivity, as they say- the best of man is still man at his best.

One area I have learnt a lot from during my interaction with the “elders” is financial intelligence. I was in a seminar a couple of weekends ago, where over 90% of the audience were retired. During the seminar, some of the retirees shared their experiences- how they went into business and failed owing to various reasons.

As I sat, I took a journey into the future and came up with this conclusion which forms the part-one of this series-Learning at the Elders' Feet. If the foundation for financial freedom is not laid  early enough (at a time when the physical strength is available), a frustrated financial old age becomes inevitable except something (favorable) happens.

Financial intelligence is very key. Have a financial plan, seek financial intelligence and be committed to financial discipline then you’ll experience financial freedom. Much more have financial integrity!!

Learning at the Elders’ Feet

Asking questions is not a sign of foolishness but the display of wisdom.

For the past few weeks I have been privileged to interact with people that are (very) older than me- not just older in age, but people that are older in experience in virtually all areas of life. This I do not take for granted, although, this is not my first time… I also promise it won’t be my last! This interaction took both formal and informal dimension.
Most of the Elders are not relations neither were/are they family members, especially those I interacted with at the informal platform. A friend once told me that, “the best way to learn from an elder is, to listen (with your mind/heart) carefully…don’t contribute but ask questions if and when necessary …”
He who fails to learn from the failures of the Elders toys with his future and will most likely pay with his future success.

I have learnt a lot in the past few weeks- even if I don’t read, listen to audio CDs etc any more, all I have “gathered” are enough to shoot me to the top as long as I am disciplined and committed enough, but I just have to keep reading, listening to CDs, attend seminars etc and involve myself in value adding activities.
The fact remains- no one is perfect. However, that is not an excuse to fail. It will be a disastrous disaster if the younger generation repeats the same mistakes the older generation made.
The failures of the elders should be wisdom for the youth.

My dear reader, as I prepare to take you on this journey- Learning at the Elders’ Feet… (sharing my encounters and lessons learnt at the feet of the elders), I encourage you to please do something with what you have learnt. To some, this is the first, and others, it is a reminder. But regardless of the category, please do something with the information you’ve got.
