The Pains of Being a Teenager- The Emotional pain

Human beings are emotional beings. As we grow, we understand ourselves better and also master our emotions. One of the areas a lot of us (regardless of the age) still battle with is our emotion. In fact, a lot of us take decisions based on emotion. The bitter truth is, emotions are often temporal. One of the definitions of the word emotion says, it is an agitation or disturbance caused by strong feelings. This definition suggests that once the cause of the feeling disappears, the feelings become irrelevant.

As a teenager, one of the areas I had serious battle with was my emotion…anger is one of the issues I had to deal with. I could get angry easily and once I did, it shoots up and my heart would beat faster and my body would be vibrating. Although I never liked it but there was little I could do to help myself.

I made up my mind to overcome this emotional devil. I worked on it and sought the help of God through prayer and determination. Since my parents were seldom around to correct and caution me whenever I flared, I had to help myself and one of the questions I asked myself then was, “is this the kind of person you want to be known as?”

Teenagers battle between being the person they ought to be and being the person their emotion wants them to be. Because they are not yet mature to handle their emotion, they bow to the pressure of their emotions. They also battle other emotional  desires such as dressing like a “star”, having sex, having a boyfriend or girlfriend, behaving like adults (which they are not)etc.

Parents, adults and teachers are supposed to study the emotions of their teenagers and help them curb certain excesses hence; making them masters over their emotion rather than having their emotion dictate to them what to do.

Let me close this edition with these words from Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad, I believe they will be of help: “keep calm, think clearly, keep an open mind, keep going, ask someone who has gone before you for some guidance, trust, and keep the faith in a higher power (God) wanting the best for you.”

More to come…thanks for reading!
