Knowledge Is Light: The More You Know, The Brighter Your Light Shines

Your gift/talent should not be an excuse for your lackadaisical attitude towards your academics. I’ve been privileged to meet talented/gifted in various fields. From my observation, what makes the difference between those who make their gift count and those who are eventually “forgotten” is their “knowledge base”. No matter how promising the gift of a man is, there’s the need for him to have a good academic background and get current information on how to deploy of his gift in order to remain relevant in today’s world, especially in this part of the world.

The importance of combining (formal) education with your area of gifting can never be over-stressed. The likes of Bill Gates, Aliko Dangote, that we refer to as drop outs or uneducated today are not where they use to be (knowledge). These people have moved on and have gained more knowledge, don’t be deceived! The more you know, the more relevant you’ll become Olumide Emmanuel an author and my teacher puts it like this, if you are not updated, you’ll be  outdated… if you’re not in the know, you can never be in the flow. What keeps you relevant is the level of knowledge you’ve got and its capacity to solve today’s problems.

Never leave it too late before you realize that talent is not enough. You need something more to qualify you. Like the popular saying goes, “heaven help those who help themselves.” My question is, what are you doing to make yourself qualified for heaven’s help? What you do to help yourself for heaven to help you is to “package” yourself by “updating/boosting” your CV.

Knowledge is light and the volume you have is what determines how much you’d shine. I implore you to accept the challenge of increasing the brightness of your light by ensuring that you constantly and regularly update your level of knowledge. Things evolve every day, don’t be left behind, make your knowledge relevant in today’s world.

Learning at the Elders’ Feet-5

As we discussed about the issue of relationship and my teacher began sharing some insightful truth about marriage with me- from experience, pouring out into me from his life. He dropped some nuggets that got me thinking about so many things at the same time, my background, philosophy and projection (about marriage).

As I journeyed into the past, I realized some of the effects of the older generation i.e. the negative consequences of their relationship flaws. Some things require our conscious EFFORT to be corrected. Our grandparents or great grandparents might have made some costly mistakes especially in the aspect of marriage but, it will be foolish of us to repeat the same mistakes, it will be unpardonable.

One of the areas of life one should not joke with is the aspect of relationship especially for those who are yet to marry, never allow your emotion dictate who to marry to you. Marriage does not depend on emotion to succeed. What it takes to have a successful marriage is more than emotional sentiments.

Build your relationship on LOVE, not on emotion, not on sentiments…let Love be the foundation of that relationship.
Read 1 Corinthians 13

I have seen the ripple effects of some grandparents’ marital blunders span from generation to generation hence having its toll on innocent grandchildren. The role a happy home plays on the psychological well-being of a child can never be overemphasized.

In life, there is always something to learn from every situation- be it good or bad. You either learn how to do it or how not to do it. Our elders have played their part, it is left to us the younger generation to correct their mistakes (if we have built our capacity to do so) or build on their good legacies.

Let us ensure we make a positive difference in every sphere of life. Let the generation coming behind have something to point to as a source of inspiration, credited to us.

Learning at the Elders’ Feet -4

The ripple effect of polygamy is far more than the initiator can envisage. In fact the consequence spans for generations. Consequently, innocent children suffer for what they had no idea about how it all started.

A statement from Robert Kiyosaki, Rich Dad Poor Dad (paraphrased) says, never make decisions based on emotions instead, pause and think before you act. If most of our grandparents who practiced polygamy had thought about the future and consequences of their action, I am sure they wouldn’t have embraced it.

“Too much money” should never be an excuse for embracing polygamy. There are better things around to do with money than amass women as if they’re property. Naturally, no human will be comfortable seeing someone who wants to take his or her place and would be happy about it. Even a first team player will always pray to be fit for every match, while the player on the bench prays that something works in his favor…laughs- I didn’t say anything ooo.

The world has changed and things are not the way they use to be. The need to address things differently is very important.

The younger generation needs to look into the future using the mistakes of the elders as guide to make better decisions. Experience is the best teacher but you don’t have to learn from your own experience when there’s a better way to. I am sure most of our four-fathers who “acquired” wives did so because they danced to the beat of their emotion.

Before you decide, think. Before you act, think…never stop using your brain, it is one the most powerful resources you’ve got. –Rich Dad Poor Dad

The elders’ fall should be a lesson to the younger generation. Don’t be carried away by laugher because an elder has fallen, but think and learn from the elders’ fall else you fall for the same thing and your fall most likely will be more disastrous. See you at the Top!!!

Learning at the Elders’ Feet -3

The importance of having a mentor can never be over accentuated. They are people who have gone ahead, their past is our present- they know what we aspiring to learn, they have fallen and they know what it takes to rise and spur on with uncommon determination, zeal and fervency. Although, things have changed yet, that does not undermine the importance of having. Just as I’ve always said, if you don’t have a mentor, please get one ASAP!!!

It’s been a rigorous leaning process for me lately, I have been privileged to move closer and interact more with one of my main teachers. For me it has been one of the blessings of the unending ASUU strike, I have learnt what academic activities would have deprived me of.

He came into my life at a point when I was about giving up on life. Although, some would say that, it’s too early to call it quit as a teenager. And I would reply with, “never blame me for doing what I did because you don’t know what I was going through.” I have a special burden for young people, especially teenagers. The pressure is much on them and we all have to come to their aid, rather than criticize them.

Some unpleasant experiences that crossed my path at a very tender age almost made me give up on the future. Thanks to a God set father-Godfather, who was on point to give me every reason to keep moving on, those mess form the content of MY MESSAGE today. He practically thought me how to read, and much more the importance of continuous and consistent personal development.  In books, I have found so many things that have made me a better person today. I may not be there yet, but I am not where I used to be.

My God sent father, a Teacher, someone who inspires me and shares his experience with me both the good and the bad ones. You have filled a great Vacuum in my life… I’m getting emotional, I have to take some break now… to be continued!!!

Learning at the Elders’ Feet-2

I was tempted to focus this edition on relationship but I had to resist the temptation…laughs!!! Probably the next would be on relationship, I bet you don’t want to miss out.

Uhmm… integrity! I was involved in a long interaction with one of the people I have learnt so much from, not just from the words of their mouth but much more-ACTION. He is a man I respect so much and I have no doubt God sent him as a gift to me and a compensation for my loss.

As we discussed, he told me about the challenges he had during his years as a civil servant occupying a very sensitive position and an influential one at that. In his words, corruption has eaten deep into the system of Nigeria that only God can turn the situation around. Every sector, even religious organizations are not left out, God Help us!!

In trying to stand for what is right people will give you names. They will go all the way to stain your “white garment”. It takes only a man with the fear of God to stand and uphold integrity, he further said, “I won’t be able to pray to God, knowing I have a skeleton in my cupboard.”

The bottom line is, if a man truly fears God he will do all that he can to stand for what pleases HIM. Even when men give him names, his desire to please and stand right before his Creator will remain undeterred.

Make a decision to stand for what is right, fight corruption. Others may fall, but take your stand and be firm. You can make it without cutting corners, people have made it and are still making it without cutting corners: blessed is the man that endures trials, at the end he will receive a crown that God has promised those who love him- James 1:12
