Knowledge Is Light: The More You Know, The Brighter Your Light Shines

Your gift/talent should not be an excuse for your lackadaisical attitude towards your academics. I’ve been privileged to meet talented/gifted in various fields. From my observation, what makes the difference between those who make their gift count and those who are eventually “forgotten” is their “knowledge base”. No matter how promising the gift of a man is, there’s the need for him to have a good academic background and get current information on how to deploy of his gift in order to remain relevant in today’s world, especially in this part of the world.

The importance of combining (formal) education with your area of gifting can never be over-stressed. The likes of Bill Gates, Aliko Dangote, that we refer to as drop outs or uneducated today are not where they use to be (knowledge). These people have moved on and have gained more knowledge, don’t be deceived! The more you know, the more relevant you’ll become Olumide Emmanuel an author and my teacher puts it like this, if you are not updated, you’ll be  outdated… if you’re not in the know, you can never be in the flow. What keeps you relevant is the level of knowledge you’ve got and its capacity to solve today’s problems.

Never leave it too late before you realize that talent is not enough. You need something more to qualify you. Like the popular saying goes, “heaven help those who help themselves.” My question is, what are you doing to make yourself qualified for heaven’s help? What you do to help yourself for heaven to help you is to “package” yourself by “updating/boosting” your CV.

Knowledge is light and the volume you have is what determines how much you’d shine. I implore you to accept the challenge of increasing the brightness of your light by ensuring that you constantly and regularly update your level of knowledge. Things evolve every day, don’t be left behind, make your knowledge relevant in today’s world.

Learning at the Elders’ Feet -3

The importance of having a mentor can never be over accentuated. They are people who have gone ahead, their past is our present- they know what we aspiring to learn, they have fallen and they know what it takes to rise and spur on with uncommon determination, zeal and fervency. Although, things have changed yet, that does not undermine the importance of having. Just as I’ve always said, if you don’t have a mentor, please get one ASAP!!!

It’s been a rigorous leaning process for me lately, I have been privileged to move closer and interact more with one of my main teachers. For me it has been one of the blessings of the unending ASUU strike, I have learnt what academic activities would have deprived me of.

 He came into my life at a point when I was about giving up on life. Although, some would say that, it’s too early to call it quit as a teenager. And I would reply with, “never blame me for doing what I did because you don’t know what I was going through.” I have a special burden for young people, especially teenagers. The pressure is much on them and we all have to come to their aid, rather than criticize them.

Some unpleasant experiences that crossed my path at a very tender age almost made me give up on the future. Thanks to a God set father-Godfather, who was on point to give me every reason to keep moving on, those mess form the content of MY MESSAGE today. He practically thought me how to read, and much more the importance of continuous and consistent personal development.  In books, I have found so many things that have made me a better person today. I may not be there yet, but I am not where I used to be.

My God sent father, a Teacher, someone who inspires me and shares his experience with me both the good and the bad ones. You have filled a great Vacuum in my life… I’m getting emotional, I have to take some break now… to be continued!!!

Learning at the Elders’ Feet

Asking questions is not a sign of foolishness but the display of wisdom.

For the past few weeks I have been privileged to interact with people that are (very) older than me- not just older in age, but people that are older in experience in virtually all areas of life. This I do not take for granted, although, this is not my first time… I also promise it won’t be my last! This interaction took both formal and informal dimension.

Most of the Elders are not relations neither were/are they family members, especially those I interacted with at the informal platform. A friend once told me that, “the best way to learn from an elder is, to listen (with your mind/heart) carefully…don’t contribute but ask questions if and when necessary …”

He who fails to learn from the failures of the Elders toys with his future and will most likely pay with his future success.

I have learnt a lot in the past few weeks- even if I don’t read, listen to audio CDs etc any more, all I have “gathered” are enough to shoot me to the top as long as I am disciplined and committed enough, but I just have to keep reading, listening to CDs, attend seminars etc and involve myself in value adding activities.

The fact remains- no one is perfect. However, that is not an excuse to fail. It will be a disastrous disaster if the younger generation repeats the same mistakes the older generation made.

The failures of the elders should be wisdom for the youth.

WHAT IS YOUR SILVER SPOON?

To be born with silver spoon in one’s mouth means to be born into wealth, into a successful and well doing family. There is a popular saying that goes thus, “everyone is not born with a silver spoon.” This has been the excuse for the failure of a lot of people and the excuse a lot more will still give as been responsible for their ineffectiveness and unproductive living.

I believe that everyone has at least a silver spoon. Every human, regardless of the age, race and gender has at least one silver spoon. All that is required from your end is to task your initiative, put your mind to work, ask your Creator to open your eyes to see.

My definition of silver spoon:

·         That special ability you have

·         It is your talent

·         A silver spoon is a point of leverage

·         It is not the wealth in social status but what makes you to become who you were created to be.

Everyone has a silver spoon. The question is what is your silver spoon? What is that special ability you’ve got, that thing that makes you unique. What is your selling point?

If you are not born with a silver spoon in your mouth, create one with your mind (investment mentality) and your hand (hard work) because nobody really came into this world with spoons in their mouth.

Five Ways I Handle Pressure

As much as a lot of us want life to be fun-filled, as much as we desire to have and enjoy the brighter side of life, for as long as we want the best out of life, we must come to terms with the fact that challenges and pressure will come our way.

Challenges and pressure are part of life but the attitude with which we face them matter a lot and often determine what becomes of us thereafter. Just like the title of the book “tough times never last but tough people do.”  My mathematics Teacher back in secondary school puts it this way, “may your way be rough.” Almost everyone in the class looked at him disdainfully… is this man here to teach or to curse … (laughs) but he took time to explain himself which was accepted by some while others remained indifferent.

The truth about life is that we will always face challenges- financial, relationship, career, spiritual, physical/health etc. these things put some form of pressure on us and how we handle them or react during this period/time (when we are under pressure) determines what we get out of such situation.  Below are five ways I handle pressure. They have worked and still working for me:

1. Music: One of the things I do when I am under pressure is to listen to inspirational songs or songs that will “distract” me from the problem and make me focus on the solution(s).
2. Heavy Sighing/Breathing Out: This has also worked for me, whenever I am under intense pressure, I try as much as possible to breathe out heavily and blow out some air. This reduces the pressure I feel within and relives me to a large extent.
3. Keep Calm: Taking some time to think and pretending as if there is no pressure is another “secret” on how to handle challenges and pressure. Learn to be calm in the midst of pressure so as to make the best/right decision. Be calm and learn to smile in the midst of pressure, I do this a lot. But know where to smile o…!! (laughs)
4. Be Positive: Being positive in spite of pressure is an attribute of champions a friend and father, S.A Ajala, says, “…challenges are the breakfast of champions.” Thanks dad, these words have worked and are still working for me.
5. God’s Help: Above all, never underestimate the power of the Greatest One, God. He is always willing to help, all you need to do is to acknowledge you need Him and, call for  His help. Hmm…He’s the present Help in need.

The Power of Your Attitude

Nothing will ever change unless you change your attitude

There’s a popular saying that, change is the only constant thing in life, a lot of people have remained on the same spot for years no thanks to their negative and unhealthy disposition towards people and life. Your attitude goes a long way in determining many things - your career, business, health, finance, relationship etc. are affected one way or today by your attitude.

Inasmuch as change is the only constant thing in life, I must say at this point that it (change) is not automatic, especially the positive one. You have to desire it, you have to want it and you have to work for it.

A change can either be positive or negative. When a change is positive, it produces positive results but a negative change will bring about negative results. Any change is as good as the kind of change itself. For instance, a progressive change is a positive one- change from one job to a better one, from a low grade car to a high grade, from a rented apartment to your own house are all examples of positive change.

is your attitude. A negative attitude will attract a negative change while a positive attitude will attract a positive change. Like produces like, my favorite book says,

Never underestimate the power of your attitude, it attracts just like magnet or an advert board. Your attitude is the aroma of your life, so watch your attitude, because you’ll hardly have another chance to correct your attitude. The purpose of the aroma is to invite, so is your attitude- it determines who and what comes to you.

Building a Better Educational Sector-part 2

This article is a response to a recent post-http://dkingzpen.blogspot.com/2013/07/building-better-educational-sector.html. One of my very good online friends and follower on twitter response to the post reads thus, “nice piece, but how do we change the attitude and mindset of people. It’s such a bewildering complex.”

For any meaningful and remarkable improvement to take place in our educational sector, we have to realize that no profession is inferior to the other, there are only different professions. Thus, the teaching profession should not be seen as inferior. It is in fact one of the most important in any human society.

I appreciate everyone that I have learnt from directly or indirectly, formally or otherwise thanks for contributing to my growth and development.

The experience I had during my compulsory national service year is one experience I will cherish for a life time. Although a challenging period, no thanks to post election crisis and the high level of insecurity.

My first day in that school brought tears to my eyes, I was so disappointed-I had never thought of teaching, I pitied myself! I couldn’t just comprehend seeing myself stay here for a year...chai!! Almost immediately, a voice within said, “…is your personal comfort more important that the lives and destinies at stake here?”

Although it was a tough decision to make and accept but at the end, I am happy I did.

 To have a better educational sector, we must be willing to sacrifice-no good thing come to be without sacrifice. Everyone cannot work in the bank, oil-company or become a CEO etc. the pay may not be attractive but the reward is worth it. Moreover, it not all about how much you earn, but how financially intelligent you have.

The good book says, “if the foundation be faulty what can the righteous do”? Unless we address the foundation of our beloved country, things will always remain the same and one of the ways of doing (building a better society) so is through the educational sector.

…a great nation needed to be built on a strong intellectual foundation.

There is the urgent need to return to the foundation i.e. the schools where the future leaders are built and correct their corrupted mindset, things will remain the same. We should imbibe in them the true VALUES of life and challenge them to embrace the right path.

The government may not do what we expect them to do. I wouldn’t blame them. They are a bunch of confused group without a clear vision and plan for the masses neither do they have any idea of what the future holds. If the government or our leaders refuse to do the right thing, there is nothing wrong in showing them what to do. It begins with you and I!

DEVELOPING THE RIGHT PASSION

The world is filled with people consumed by passion. I can say without any doubt that every man you see walking has a burning passion for something. Adults and young adults, guys and ladies, young and old all have a passion for something. We all have something that spur us as individuals and make us go all the way- even when others seem to be despising us…that is what passion does, it makes you go all the way.

In the words of a screenwriter and Director, Joss Whedon;

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping…waiting…and though unwanted…it will stir…open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us…guides us…passion rules us all, and we need to obey.  What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could leave without maybe we’d  know some kind of peace…but we would be hollow…Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without we’d be truly dead.”

  What is passion?

v  Something that is desired intensely

v  Intense enthusiasm: a strong liking or enthusiasm for a subject or activity e.g. a passion for music

v  Object of enthusiasm: the object of somebody's intense interest or enthusiasm

What you are passionate about, you can give your life for.

I must say at this point that there are two kinds of passion-negative and positive passion. It is not just good enough to be passionate about something or to have passion. Having the right kind of passion is as important as the breath in your nostril. Only those with the right passion have their names in the good book of live.

We live in a country where the passion of some people is in embezzling public funds, corruption and engaging in other anti- human activities. That is not the positive or right kind of passion we are talking about. All these (aforementioned) are the negative and wrong kind of passion to have or develop as it leaves you with no lasting legacy, where all you would be remembered for is the number of people you deprived of their rights and those you made to suffer and experience the negative and unhappy side of life.

Having the right passion at the wrong time is also unhealthy. For instance, having money is good but being so carried away by the desire to make money at all cost is wrong and unhealthy especially when you do it at the expense of other people’s joy and well-being. Sex is good and was created by God to be enjoyed but being carried away and consumed by the desire to have sex as a single (not married) is wrong and can often lead to regrets and grief.

      Why Should I Develop The Right Passion?

ü  The book of wisdom says, "it is better to have a good name than to have riches…” there is nothing that is worth replacing a good and lasting legacy. The likes of Isaac Newton, Bill Gates (Microsoft), Micheal Dell (the chairman of the board of Directors of Dell Inc.,) , Aliko Dangote, Pastor E.A Adeboye etc. are men of substance who channeled their passion towards the right path of life and they will continually “live on” because of the impact they have made on mankind. A life well lived is not that with the best of cars, fat accounts, expensive mansions etc. but a life that is filled with impact and good works.

ü  Another reason you should develop the right passion is because it will speak for or against your children or generation that will come after you.

ü  It creates an unexplainable Peace of Mind. There is a kind of inner satisfaction and peace of mind you’ll have when you know you are doing the right thing. A lot of people will not dare to move around freely because of their unhealthy deeds.

ü  The Law of Sowing and Reaping: some will say, “What goes around will always come around.”  If you do good definitely you will reap the benefits and if you do bad…? You know the answer.

In closing, let me leave you with this thought,

Why have passion for what can harm you?

Why run after what will stain your robe?

Why engage in what will speak against you?

Why channel my energy towards the wrong course?
