Learning at the Elders’ Feet -3

The importance of having a mentor can never be over accentuated. They are people who have gone ahead, their past is our present- they know what we aspiring to learn, they have fallen and they know what it takes to rise and spur on with uncommon determination, zeal and fervency. Although, things have changed yet, that does not undermine the importance of having. Just as I’ve always said, if you don’t have a mentor, please get one ASAP!!!

It’s been a rigorous leaning process for me lately, I have been privileged to move closer and interact more with one of my main teachers. For me it has been one of the blessings of the unending ASUU strike, I have learnt what academic activities would have deprived me of.

He came into my life at a point when I was about giving up on life. Although, some would say that, it’s too early to call it quit as a teenager. And I would reply with, “never blame me for doing what I did because you don’t know what I was going through.” I have a special burden for young people, especially teenagers. The pressure is much on them and we all have to come to their aid, rather than criticize them.

Some unpleasant experiences that crossed my path at a very tender age almost made me give up on the future. Thanks to a God set father-Godfather, who was on point to give me every reason to keep moving on, those mess form the content of MY MESSAGE today. He practically thought me how to read, and much more the importance of continuous and consistent personal development.  In books, I have found so many things that have made me a better person today. I may not be there yet, but I am not where I used to be.

My God sent father, a Teacher, someone who inspires me and shares his experience with me both the good and the bad ones. You have filled a great Vacuum in my life… I’m getting emotional, I have to take some break now… to be continued!!!

Learning at the Elders’ Feet

Asking questions is not a sign of foolishness but the display of wisdom.

For the past few weeks I have been privileged to interact with people that are (very) older than me- not just older in age, but people that are older in experience in virtually all areas of life. This I do not take for granted, although, this is not my first time… I also promise it won’t be my last! This interaction took both formal and informal dimension.
Most of the Elders are not relations neither were/are they family members, especially those I interacted with at the informal platform. A friend once told me that, “the best way to learn from an elder is, to listen (with your mind/heart) carefully…don’t contribute but ask questions if and when necessary …”
He who fails to learn from the failures of the Elders toys with his future and will most likely pay with his future success.
Adeniran Bamisaye
I have learnt a lot in the past few weeks- even if I don’t read, listen to audio CDs etc any more, all I have “gathered” are enough to shoot me to the top as long as I am disciplined and committed enough, but I just have to keep reading, listening to CDs, attend seminars etc and involve myself in value adding activities.
The fact remains- no one is perfect. However, that is not an excuse to fail. It will be a disastrous disaster if the younger generation repeats the same mistakes the older generation made.
The failures of the elders should be wisdom for the youth.
Deolu Akinyemi
My dear reader, as I prepare to take you on this journey- Learning at the Elders’ Feet… (sharing my encounters and lessons learnt at the feet of the elders), I encourage you to please do something with what you have learnt. To some, this is the first, and others, it is a reminder. But regardless of the category, please do something with the information you’ve got.

Friends of Benefit-Part 1

Over the last few weeks, especially on weekends, I have been privileged to hook up with some friends I have not seen in a long time. Owing to different reasons, we have been apart (physically) - after all 20 friends cannot “play” together for 20 years.

We had a lot of things to talk about, recalling those good old days and motivating ourselves to make the future a better one. As the gist went on, we learnt from one-another's mistakes and shortcomings -we shared our experiences and updated ourselves about our various activities.
More importantly, we talked about solutions to the shortcomings we highlighted.

My dear reader, any kind of relationship that is not adding value to you is not worth sweating over, be it a relationship with the same sex or from the opposite sex. A friend is like an exchange- you exchange ideas, experiences, motivation, knowledge, inspiration etc. even mentors learn from their protégé…in case you don’t know, ask your mentor if you have one.

Take note of the following nuggets about friendship or any kind of relationship:

  •   Everyone has something to add to the other.
  •   Everyone is comfortable in one another’s presence.
  •   No one is too big to be corrected
  •   No one is afraid to share his or her success secrets with others.
  • We can count on one another’s loyalty even while “blind”
  • No (positive) sacrifice is too much to make for one another.
  • Everyone’s success or failure is the responsibility of all.

Why Personal Development?

Personal/self development is any activity that culminates into your growth, worth and increases your value. Activities that improve awareness and (Self) identity, develop talents and potential, build human capital and facilitate employability, enhance quality of life and contribute to the realization of dreams and aspirations.

It includes formal and informal activities for developing others.

Without any effort or commitment to improve anything, such thing will remain in its raw form thereby been underestimated and under-valued. Hence, the need for development to bring out the best out of such thing/product/material- you can never get the best out of any raw material until it is developed or worked upon.

What is Development?

  1. Any activity that aids the quality of a particular thing or person.
  2. To become or make larger, more mature, or advanced.
  3. Start to exist, experience, or possess.
  4. Convert to a new purpose
  5. To increase the worth of something

Why Do I Need Personal –Development?

“Where purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable”
                             Dr. Myles Munroe

There is often a reason for any activity that we embark upon as human beings which explains the fact that we are logical in nature.  When God created us, He expects us to keep improving and developing. He expects us to develop and become better in order to fulfill His purpose.

“Where you are today is your fault. Where you’ll be tomorrow is your choice”
                             Adeolu Akinyemi

We need personal development because:
  1. It directs our attention to important things.
  2. It increases our capacity.
  3. It connects us with positive people.
  4. It increases our worth and value.
  5. It enhances leadership.
  6. It increases our level of competence.
  7. Without personal Development fulfilling purpose is a delusion.
  8. It is a sign of maturity and responsibility.

It is important that we invest in ourselves constantly to upgrade by continuously learning new things, acquiring new/more skills. It requires your commitment, care and attention.

Just a Moment of Madness

The management of stardom is by far a different game compared to attaining it (stardom). Some people would say, it requires more to manage success that it takes to attain it- keeping the success you have achieved is more important and demanding than attaining the success itself. The management of success is totally a different ball game. Many stars have today been forgotten just because of one moment of madness they displayed when it mattered most. Becoming a “star” does not stop with being a start, it takes more than that, the higher you go, the more the challenges and the more you need to put certain things (character, discipline, focus etc.) in place in order to protect and guard your success jealously.

The recently concluded African U-17 football championship showed a lot of promises and raised a lot of hope especially the display put up by the Nigerian team, the Golden Eaglet. Going by the way they dusted their opponents, and scoring goals with ease. A lot of people were confident the cup was coming to Nigeria; however, a giant had to be conquered for this “dream” to become a reality, the young Elephant of Cote d'Ivoire, were the only team to have defeated the Eaglet on their way to the final. A lot of Nigerians believed the young Elephant won the group match by a stroke of luck, thanks to a late goal- “winning na (is) winning o”.

The Eaglet had the match under control not until the last minute of the match when a costly mistake cost them the match. However, that did not stop them from reaching the final, after apologizing to Nigerians and showing us they had learnt from the unexpected defeat.

I watched with dismay and disbelief as the least expected happened. First, it was the referee who decided to kill what should have been a beautiful match. He showed that he never had what it takes to officiate on the big stage, as some of his calls were questionable –this is not needed at such a very important time and stage of an event that has drawn the eyes of the whole continent and the world.

On the other hand, the Eaglet did not help matters as they failed to convert begging chances. They wasted lots of goal scoring chances that would have sealed the victory for them. As lots of people had predicted, they had things going in their favor until they lost their cool. At first, it was a red card, a silly foul committed by a player; he threw his elbow at an opponent behind him (and trust, the opponent made a show out of it), which attracted the referee’s “generosity” and his sending off was inevitable. There was about 15 minutes to the end of the match, and the team (Eaglet) had to complete the match with 10 players, against a physical side as the young Elephant!

After 90 minutes, it was straight to penalties- what some people call anybody’s game. But to certain extent each team at this stage have their destinies in their hands once they maintain team and individual discipline praying that the “god of soccer” smiles on them. As the match went into penalties, I remembered the AFCON (2000) final played in Lagos, Nigeria, between the Indomitable Lions of Cameron and the Super Eagles of Nigeria. I silently prayed same thing will not repeat itself. Not long after my prayer, a Nigerian player (whose name I can’t remember at this moment) stepped forward to take the penalty and before I could blink my eyes, he had taken the kick.

What a miss!! I was so displeased and bitter not particularly about the miss but, at the way he took the kick. How could you dash the hope of over 150million people? What sort of confident is that? Na new style be this? Questions unending kept strolling through my mind. Questions would never stop coming but the fact is, this is just a typical example and picture of how a lot of people have allowed a moment of madness ruin what they have spent time and resources building. A moment of insanity can cost you your whole achievement.

Attitude requires consistency, especially a positive attitude. This is the lesson I learnt from the story of this guy’s moment of madness. Just like the title of J.C Maxwell’s book, “the difference maker”, the attitude would have made the difference at that stage and moment. But he lost it, no thanks to his inability to remain cool and professional when it mattered most and just the attitude of a player cost the whole team a moment of glory and victory.

Respect or Hypocrisy

Whenever and wherever I see people work or serve I am often more interested in what motivates them. I was in a particular gathering recently when this taught kept craving for my attention and I had no choice but “give in” to the pressure. I think we often mistake hypocrisy for loyalty and respect. A lot of subordinates, who claim to respect and be loyal to their boss, are nothing but hypocrites.
someone's past is your present...avoid the mistakes they made...it is better to learn from another person's mistake than been a "case-study"

My Definition of VALUES

The values of a man determine to a large extent what he does and how he thinks.

The value you place on somebody or something determines your disposition towards it (how you handle it). The dictionary defines values as, beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment (either for or against something). what your values are determines what you value -I value things such as; Character, Integrity, Self development, Life, Honesty, knowledge and Love to mention just a few, and the way I relate with and to these things is as a result of the worth I have placed on them.
The value I place on the people in my life is responsible for how I relate with them, my principle about inter-personal relationship states that ”treat people well to the best of your ability because you can never tell where and when you’ll meet again ” My personal definition of values is an acronym which I’ll share with you in a while and I implore you to work with it closely because I believe it will help you a great deal. My dear reader life is too short that you don’t care how you live ( your life)…don’t ever think you’ll have time on your side. Do all your best to make the best use of your time. Dear reader, your life is so precious that someone had to give His ALL for you. My definition of values is given as follows:

Vision: this is the picture of the future you see about yourself which has been revealed to you by a supernatural power GOD); and is applicable to every area of your life i.e. spiritual, finance, relationship, career etc.

Attitude is your disposition towards your pictured future. That is, what you’re thinking or how you are acting towards your vision which includes people regardless of the age, societal status and unexpected occurrences (challenges) etc. someone defines attitude as “the Aroma of your heart”.

Legacy: your legacy is what speaks for you when you are no more either because you have moved on or dead. Another word for legacy is will- a legal document declaring a person's wishes regarding the disposal of their property when they die. How rich is will, what is it worth, what will be said about that vision of yours (positive or negative), how long will your legacy live after you are no more and how WELL are you living? Stop thinking you are too young to start building a legacy- time has never being any one’s friend.

Usefulness: never continue to think you exist for yourself alone. No man was created to live in isolation. Different people have contributed to get you to where you are today in other words, they have been useful to you and courtesy demands that you do same to them and others. That vision, gift, talent, influence, wealth etc. is meant to be a platform for you to reach out and be of use to people-they need you.

Empowerment: my dear friend, you have been empowered to empower others; your vision should have a way of making (impacting) others better. Besides that, you should also keep making yourself better as each day passes by- find time to know more that you did yesterday, acquire more knowledge and improve your worth. Empower yourself- learn something, get better each day, read (good) books, attend seminars etc.

Structure(s): Dear friend, your life is a structure and must be treated as such, the quality of materials been used to build it matters a lot. Just as you’d want the best for your residential building so you should for your life. The kind of materials you allow to be used- the people, books, films etc. that you expose yourself to matter a whole lot. How well are these things contributing to the quality of your life. If you don’t have a mentor or teacher, get one very soon- someone you respect and can learn from.
My friends, it is high-time we begin to live our lives in such a way that it becomes good example to someone, somehow and somewhere. Let’s build the right values hence, making our society a better place. The above principles are applicable to any area of life and with the right attitude, good results are inevitable. They have worked and are still working for me and I believe they will work for you. All the best! Vision + Attitude + Legacy + Usefulness + Empowerment +Structures = VALUES
