Welcome to the Part 2 :

A friend loves at all time…

As I string these words together, I recall a recent experience with a close “friend”. One of those things… like we say back then, “you aren’t yet friends if you’ve never disagreed/quarreled”. If you’ve never been offended by a friend then watch out cos it could be closer than you think…laughs! In whatever relationship you’re, there is the need for you to come to terms with reality-offences will come!

It takes love and maturity to forgive/overlook offences and continue in any kind of relationship. Many people have been hurt and a lot will still be hurt­-not a curse but the reality of live. The earlier you accept the fact that, no one is perfect, the better for you and your relationship.

The reason hurt exists is to test the strength of that relationship- forgiveness comes first in the dictionary, so practice advance forgiveness. A mother won’t throw away her suckling child for biting her breast while breast feeding him/her, so never because of an offence put an end that relationship, except you are so convinced it CANNOT work again. Forgiveness is an attribute of champion.

Even the hand stringing these words together is not exempted, we need to make things right (never stop forgiving). As I ponder on the word in the above statement again, it suggests to me that-Love in friendship should be a continuous action just like the verb. Friendship is a commitment that demands the energy all the parties involved. Like the common saying, “it takes two to tango”. But you must realize that not all friendship last forever. Let me close with the words of a friend and colleague, Taiwo;

I use to be scared of loosing friends, now I concede, friends are for different seasons. You lose some, you gain some.

But remember, NEVER end any relationship with hurt, please FORGIVE. I care about your happiness.

Friends of Benefit-Part 1

Over the last few weeks, especially on weekends, I have been privileged to hook up with some friends I have not seen in a long time. Owing to different reasons, we have been apart (physically) - after all 20 friends cannot “play” together for 20 years.

We had a lot of things to talk about, recalling those good old days and motivating ourselves to make the future a better one. As the gist went on, we learnt from one-another's mistakes and shortcomings -we shared our experiences and updated ourselves about our various activities.

More importantly, we talked about solutions to the shortcomings we highlighted. 

My dear reader, any kind of relationship that is not adding value to you is not worth sweating over, be it a relationship with the same sex or from the opposite sex. A friend is like an exchange- you exchange ideas, experiences, motivation, knowledge, inspiration etc. even mentors learn from their protégé…in case you don’t know, ask your mentor if you have one.

Take note of the following nuggets about friendship or any kind of relationship:

•   Everyone has something to add to the other. 
•   Everyone is comfortable in one another’s presence. 
•   No one is too big to be corrected 
•   No one is afraid to share his or her success secrets with others.
• We can count on one another’s loyalty even while “blind”
• No (positive) sacrifice is too much to make for one another.
• Everyone’s success or failure is the responsibility of all.

Don’t make the same Mistake!

It’s a Sunday morning, after a few worship songs, my thought flipped back to some of the activities that happened during the week. One of the most significant if not the most significant was that which occurred on Wednesday.

Setting my eyes on a 16 year old cousin of mine- for the first time ever.

I thought about many things at the same time as different questions kept seeking for answers. Out of all these, the question which got my attention is, “why did it take this long”?

One area of your life you must not joke with is your relationship/marital-the consequences are more than you can predict or handle. Most of our grandparents and great-grand parents were polygamist and this has caused a lot of problems for their descendants many of which are unresolved. For some people, that is the genesis of most of their problems and challenges- unnecessary/unhealthy rivalry, bitterness, strife etc 

I thought for a moment and was forced to voice out some of my thoughts. What would have been the story if we had capitalized on the advantage of “numbers”? Perhaps some of the challenges we are facing now would have been easily averted and things would have been easier for many people.

The lessons I learnt include:
 

1.      Your decision will not only affect you.

2.      The consequence of your actions outweighs your action itself.

3.      Population/number does not equal advantage except you do something.

4.      Don’t create more problems than you can solve

She Lifted Me

Overwhelmed with joy
She lifted me
Lost in celebration
Of a successful completion
She lifted me.

To my utmost surprise
And all around us
In her arms
She took me off the ground
And into the air I went.

Like a baby
In the hands of a caring mother
She carried me
With a triumphant smile
Boldly written on her face.

And the white community
Having their day
I was in the air
Also, exposing the white freely
Oh! What a day to remember.

With my left hand lifted in celebration
With my right, held her back across the shoulder
With her left across my back
And her right behind my kneels
We were lost in celebration.

I’ll always look back to this moment
I’ll always remember this day
I’ll always keep in the museum of memory.
What a wonderful day,
The day she lifted me.

A TRUE MOTHER

Carried away by the desire to give me a life
You abandoned yours
And left your father's house for another man's
All for the picture of me and my siblings to come alive.

You embraced a strange community 'cos of your FRUITS Always on stand to cover my flaws
Preventing me from the harms that would have terminated my sojourn.
Oh, what a Sweet mother!

When my legs were tender and kneels not strong enough to pace through my daily journey
Your back made the difference for me
Like a landlord, I claimed the rent.

A place of comfort in the midst of thorns
A refuge and a safe place in danger
My favorite place to answer nature's call.

From your breast my hunger was silenced
Your breasts daily assassinated my hunger
Oh, can't stop relishing those days
Can't stop wanting more of the purest milk I've ever tasted.

Thanks to the Almighty
The One who fore-knew my desires
And to them he granted the BEST provision
I'll Cherish you till eternity.

You're the best one could ever wish for
Thanks, my gateway to earth
The one who granted my work-permit
I'll ALWAYS LOVE you Mum..

Nigerians, the Problem of Nigeria

 

Still in the atmosphere of the 52nd independence anniversary, while on my way from Lagos to Kwara state, while reading a book and listening to music and MP3 messages from my phone with the earphone glued to my ears. I spared some moment thinking about my beloved country, Nigerian and her journey so far. For a country that is blessed with wonderful resources in human, material and natural resources and yet things are not in proper shape in the midst of the ‘abundance’. It is the conviction of many that Nigeria has problem(s) or better still Nigeria is not operating at the level she ought to as an independent nation. A 52year old for that matter! I choose not to belong to such school of thought that Nigeria has problem(s). I belong to a different school of thought which believes that Nigeria does not have problems. But Nigerians have problems and have successfully infected the innocent Nigeria with their problems. And as a result of this, Nigeria has become a victim of Nigerians problems. It is a sorry state to be in such a predicament caused by the inhabitants of such a blessed land- blessed with all kinds of resources in abundance. But due to the short-sightedness of the people the abundance resources have become scarce and this confirms the saying that, what a man sees determines (to a large extent) how he behaves and relates to live. I will discuss about 5 to 6 of the so called problems attached to Nigeria by her citizens or inhabitants. 
 

1. Corruption: You’ll agree with me that the number one problem on the lips of most people if asked what the major problem of 'Nigeria' is, corruption would be the response of well over 80%. It is a terrible situation/experience- where things are not done in the normal way, the absence of integrity in dealing with people and situations, not being straight in dealing with people. It's difficult where to get something done you would have to 'tip' the person who is in position in order to get such thing done. What a pity state. And as a result, Nigeria is regarded as one of the most corrupt nation in the world, no thanks to Nigerians.

2. Lack of Maintenance Culture: I was left disappointed when I saw the pictures (slides) of the current state of the National Stadium (Abuja)...I learnt the stadium was built with about N50 billion just about 9years ago precisely in 2003 for the 2003 all Africa games hosted by Nigeria... and to put it back in a 'proper shape' for football matches it’ll cost about N100 million....when are we going to stop wasting money and resources…It's a sad story. If the stadium had been properly maintained, there wouldn't have been need to waste tax-payers’ money to put it back in good condition. This is just one among many facilities that have fallen victim of the Nigerian lack of maintenance attitude which is doing us more harm than good. 
 

3. Selfishness: Stinginess resulting from a concern for your own welfare and a disregard of others. Nigeria has suffered a lot in the hands of selfish individuals who proclaim themselves as leaders. Leaders who have done nothing but enrich their pocket at the expense of those they claim to be representing (serving). Leaders and individuals who are concerned about nobody will never heed to the needs of the masses. This is the reason you'll see a public servant diverting the public fund into his personal account.
 

 4. Hypocrisy: My dictionary defines hypocrisy as, insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have. This is another peculiar characteristic of Nigerians especially those who claim to be spiritual leaders, it's a pity most of them have sold their conscience for a piece of meat. Those who are meant to talk senses into the “heads” of this bunch of selfish Nigerians who have turned themselves to ‘god’ forgetting the fact that “nothing lasts forever”. Isn’t a man of integrity supposed to speak and act what he says?
 

 5. Bad Leadership: In the words of Dr. Myles Munroe, 'everything rises and falls on leadership', Nigeria is one of the most blessed countries on planet earth when it comes to human resources. But it is a pity that she's suffered from one succession of bad administration to another since 1960 (when she became an independent state). In spite of the abundance of human resources, Nigeria has suffered greatly in the hands of people who know little or nothing about leadership- individuals who think leadership is all about oppressing the masses and leaders having their way. On the contrary, the best way to lead is to serve; a leader is expected to represent the public and not his personal interest. 
I suggest that any candidate vying for any political office or appointed to occupy any office should undergo a compulsory school of leadership-where such person will be taught what leadership is all about. Rather than coming up and abusing power and position, not having any idea of what he/she is supposed to do as a leader. Having said all these, there is no hopeless situation except for the lifeless. In as much as there is life, all hope is not yet lost. A change of attitude is therefore demanded from us as individuals and fellow countrymen. Let us change our disposition towards our country and approach national issues with zeal and patriotism just like our heroes past. And above all, let the fear of GOD guide our hearts in whatever we do. A man who fears God will not treat another man badly and will not hesitate to do what he’s elected or appointed to do. And I must stress at this point that, all Nigerians have a part to play in this fight and the reclaiming the lost pride and dignity of our beloved country, Nigeria. God Bless Nigeria!
